The following is from a Sail Francisco paper: "Poughkeepsie, N .Y., October 24. —Major Delmar dfeated Sweet -Marie in a match race for a purse of 2500d01. oil thoHlldsonßiver Driving .Park yesterday afternoon, winning two out of three heats. The race resulted in the three fastest heats ever trotted on the track in a race. About 1500 porsons saw tho match. Major Delmar drew the pole, -and had a length the advantage at cite quarter. The Major led all the way. It was a great race in the homo stretch, both drivers urging their horses, and Delmar won by a neck. In tlio second heat Delmar broke on the word, and lost tbe lead at the half. Sweet Marie led by two lengths at tlie. upper turn, and maintained the distance to the finish. .Aidfolia Id stole tlio pole for the third heat on the turn, anil was two lengths in the lead at the quarter. Andrews moved up a little on tho back stretch, and was only a length back at the half. At the three-quarters tho horses were on even terms, but, entering the stretch, the mare broke, and Delmar won easily by two llengths. Poseidon is again spelling at Windsor. Ho might he all the better for a lengthy holiday, hut in all probability he will be called upon to act in the weight-for age races in the Autumn, and no doubt he will hold liis own, too. So far, Poseidon has competed in 27 races, which is four more runs than Carbine had during the same period of his career. At tho last meeting at Ascot, one of Mr. J. Wren’s courses, near Alelbourne. the principal event was won by Flying Spark, by Clanranald. — Catherine Wheel. Another New Zealander. in Savoury, was third.
