BOWLING
NORTH ISLAND ASSOCIATION’S MEETING. (Special to Times). AUCKLAND, January 6. Over four hundred bowlers were gathc oil on Auckland greens this morning at the opening of the interclub b iwling tournament. The weather was g’oriously fine and in the absen t© of Air. A. AL Alyers, president of the Association, Air.'J. AL Alennie, uuio an ex< client speech. At the ccndusion Aire. Alyers threw the jask and said :—-‘Gentlemen bowlers I decl ire thirs bowling tournament open and hope on have a very pleasant time.” The teams then dispersed and went to their respective greens. The chief local interest centred in the Gisborne-Feikling match ai.d contrary to all expectations Gisborne won on both rinks. In the nat -lies agaii#t Alanaia and Kyburno Gisborne were again victorious. All members of the team played well, but special mention should be made of Martin's play, both in drawing and driving. Alartin showed gread proficiency and the successes of tho team must in a great measure be put down to his efforts. Turangaimi played three games Wangtnui—and suffered defeat in each game. All the members of the new dub being new to tournament play thev were at somewhat of a disadvantage. but the scores do not indicate the quality of the play. Great pleasure was expressed at the presence of the veteran Witty who, with Air. J. H. Alartin played in the Pairs competition. They were unfortunate in meeting a strong panin Smith and Parsons, who won on the last l-ead bv one point. 'l'he Hon. Jas Carroll is at present in Auckland and is taking a keen inter© t in the doings of the Gisborne tC The Hon. Alillar is a playing member for the Wellington Club who were beaten by Ponsonby on tlieir own harbor excursion to-night was a "rent success. , . ' fhe favorite for the tournament is Carlton.
