The Gisborne Times. PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 15, 1908. BUTCHERS AND THE CASH SYSTEM.
It was only to be expected that the butchers would follow the example set set by tho bakers, and would endeavor to abolish the credit system in favor of cash dealing. A careful perusual of the position as disclosed by tho announcement which appears in this issue suggests that the purveyors of meat have been more considerate towards the requirements of consumers than have the bakers. Whether this is because tho conditions of the butchers’ trade would seem to make it almost impossible to compel a daily settlement, or from an inherent sense of fair dealing it is not necessary to inquire. Where tho baker demands payment every time he leaves a loaf the butcher gives ten days’ credit. In other words the butchers havo seen lit to attempt a modification or tho credit system and tho course adopted by them appears to he thoroughly reasonable. Moreover, anyone acquainted with the conditions of the stock market and the precarious nature of the butcher’s business will recognise that tho reductions advertised are quite legitimate and tho prices now fixed are certainly not exorbitant. As'a matter of fact wo believe that they are considerably lower than current rates in other towns of the Dominion so that Gisborne housewives will have the consolation of knowing that in one important branch of domestic expenditure they are better off than thoso in other towns.
