BUSH FIRES.
Press AMOciatkm. EKETAIIUNA, January 17. The wind last night caused tho firevs to fresli.cn in tho .district. They wore the most severe at Hukanui, where houses owned by Messrs j ]3ond and J. Turner, settlers, were completely destroyed. The settlers wore fighting tho flames all tho night, and several families moved out of the fire zone, nnd left their houses to tako their chance. Popplowell’s timber mill was only saved by the unremitting efforts of a largo band of Workers. Hundreds of acres of grass and fencing were destroyed in other parts of the district. Iho settlors were compelled to work a.l night in protecting their homes. A light fall of rain after midnight, and tho wind changing, relieved the situation, though the fires arc sti.l burning.

CHRISTCHURCH, January 17. Mr. AY. T Moon, who was taken to the Hospital on Wednesday, suffering from the effects of seven burns, received whilst attempting, with many others, to subdue tho grass _ tires on the Caslnnero Hills, died this morning at 1.30 at tho Hospital. Mr. Moon spent a fairly quiet night on Wednesday night, and during yesterday, hopes were out r.:i::u d of u s ultimate recovery Ithese were not destined to be realisnl. luhvovoi, and Mr. Moon succumbed to shocu to Ins system, consequent on tho severe burns bo sustained An inquest was held this evening when lie verdict was returned that death lutd been caused by shock, due to severe burns sustained by deceased.
