The present spell of heat is the worst for thirty-five years. The discomfort has been intensified by the hot north wind, bringing clouds of lust and smoke from the surrounding bush fires. The houses are too hot for sleep and thousands are sleeping on lawiis -and in gardens and parks >r are camped at the seashore where bathing proceeds throughout the night. Blacksmiths, in the Coverniient workshops, and the employees of ’oiiio private firms have been allowed jo cease work. The doctors are having a busy time with numerous cases of heat apoplexy, several people dropping in the streets vesterday. One Wiver of a brewery cart succumbed. Horses are suffering terribly, and mine have dropped dead. The ico -o-marn'es are unable to. keep pace' with the demand. C'onntrv reports show that the heat 's increasing.
