LOST OFF THE MONOWAI

Press Association. WELLINGTON, Jan. 23. Mr. H. K. Bethune, who was lost off the Monowai, had not been in •ood health for some time. About ix months ago he became a victim to nfluenza, which completely prostrated him. Early in the present month ho fwent up to the Wau-arapa to re-, jbuperatej but returned to Wellington about a week ago, feeling no better •for the change. Yesterday, however, lie was in capital spirits, and when ho went on board the steamer last night with somo relatives and friends Sio looked better than he had done lor some months. . Mr. Bethune, who was very popular, was a son of the laic Mr. John Bethune, an early and respected settler of Wellington and was horn in this city in 1807. lie was educated at Wellington College, and entered the service of the Bank of Australasia hero m 18/4. He soon displayed an aptitude for the business, and made rapid progress in the service. Ho was accountant in Wellington for some time, and subsequently ho acted as manager at Dunedin and Auckland.
