D RINK AN]) DEATH. Wilton Sir Win. Gull, physician i.o Quoin Victoria, stated before 'the House of Lords that “ALCOHOL WAS THE MOST DESTRUCTIVE AGENCY IN THE COUNTRY,” iho uttored a. truth, tlio painful coniirmation of which' is supplied bv 'abundant illustrations drawn from ovory possible hold of investigation. It is a remarkable fact that this subject bewrs a close relation alike to the materials used in the making of strong drink and to the action oi the drink itself upon the drinker. In both oases it means DEATH. The materials necessary for the manufacture of alcoholic liquors, such as wheat,..barley, potatoes, fruit, and other natural products, 4 ' into which a beneficent God has put life and strength for tho sustenance of man, have to undergo tln> process of destruction an order that the brewer and distiller may bottle up their mysterious concoctions. Not only are the choicest natural products destroyed in the manufacture of strong drink, hut the article, when turned out, does for the consumer wliat the producer has done for Nature —KILLS. It not only destroys him, lml those dependent upon him, and all with which he has to do. Strong drink lays its ruthless bund upon the Home, and turns it into a hovel. It throttles Labor, paralyses Trade, and seriously affects.the Nation, injuring its commercial prestige, dogging tho wheels of its polL tical machinery, and sapping tho very foundations of its social fabric. WHATEVER THE LIQUOR TRAFFIC TOUCHES IS BLIGHTED. AND ITS EMBRACE IS ALWAYS DEATH. 'The actuarial returns from some of the largest Insurance Companies, >and from various Friendly Societies, give no striking and unanswerable testimony to tho wholesale destruction of human life for which the Drink Traffic is wholly 'responsible. Lack of space to givo figures in support of this does not concern us, as the grim fact is well known. Some time ago the Regis-trar-General of Great Britain said in his annual report: “THE DEATH RATE UNDOUBTEDLY DEPENDS MORE UPON THE EXTENT TO WHICH PEOPLE ARE BROUGHT INTO CONTACT' AVI Til DRINK THAN UPON ANYTHING ELSE WHATEVER,” The l.ate Dr. Norman Kerr, tho greatest authority on inebriety, was angry with tho teetotallers because they' said that 60,000 people died every year in Great Britain through the influence of alcoholic liquor, and in order to prove these statements to be grossly exaggerated he made an exh uistivo examination of the subject. AVliat • was the result? Simply "this: In his great work on “Mortality of Intemperance,” he wrote: “When asked to present the final results of my investigation to the last Social Science Congress 1 was compelled to admit that at least 120,000 of our population innualiy lost their Lives through alcoholic excess —40.500 dying from their own intemperance, and 79,500 from accident, .violence, poverty, or disease arising from the intemperance of others.”

A business, the oliief harvest of which is DEATH, lias, with unconscious irony, been appropriately called bv those who carry it on—“THE Tit ADIS.” Advt. C.T.
