SOME VARIED EXPERIENCES

On Sunday, January 19tli, a party of Gisborne 'residents left for Wairoa. The party consisted of Messrs. VY. L. Clayton, Julius A. Caesar, and A. B. Carmichael in Mr. Clayton’s car, and -Messrs. Norman Alair. J. M. -Gouldsmitli and A. F. Kennedy in Mr. Gouldsmith’s car. A start was mad© at 3 o’clock on Sundav afternoon. One ear proceeded only to the Rimuhau station, arriving there without mishap on Sunday evening. Tho other car went- on to Parikanapa-. The party at ltimuhau left early on Monday morning, and after sundry trifling mishaps, which were promptly set -right -by Mr. Gouldsmitli, the party arrived at Parikanapa, and the whole party left about 11 o’clock for Tiniroto, which was reached without any serious trouble. Tbo roads were found to be very dusty, but otherwise wero in very good order. All of the party remarked on the improvement in the land beyond Parikanapa. Some years ago it was covered- with manuka and other scrub, and looked capable of carrying only -about half a sheep to tile acre, while on the present occasion it looked as if it could easily carry one and a half sheep oi more.

After.luncheon.at Tiniroto the party continued' their journey at about 3.30 p.m. They passed through To Ileiiiga, but had not time to visit the falls. Approaching Alarumaru “the shades of eve were falling fast,” and speed was put- on. Here, owing either to- a flaw an a tyre or to tlie nature of the road, one of the cars was upset. . Nobody was seriously hurt, and with the help of some passing buggies the car -was .righted; and after Mr. Gouldsmitli had put in some work on the car, the party were able to proceed-, and -arrived at Wairoa at 10 p.m. on Monday evening.

The party stayed in Wairoa for the races and the Show. The races were well conducted, and the Show left nothing to be desired. The chief features at the Show were the show of horses and the ladies’ jumping. The members of the party met many old acquaintances, and with other visitors were entertained at .a smoke concert on Friday evening by the A. and P. Society. Messrs. A. L. D. Fraser, M.H.R., and Air. J. A. Gilruth, Chief Veterinarian of the Agricultural Department, were present, and tniany interesting -speeches we-re made.

On Saturday morning the party left for Waibaremoana, and arrived there without any mishap, tho cars working at nearly top speed. ' The roads were very good at the time, but could hardly bo recommended m wet weather. In Wairoa the party had to put up with very rough accommodation, owing to the big crowd in the town, and they were very agreeably surprised at the comfort provided at the accommodation house by the proprietor, Mr. Grout, who saw that the party got every comfort. Photographs were taken of the first three motor cars to reach the accommodation house without assistance, the cars comprising those of tho Gisborne party and one belonging to a Napier man. All previous ears had to be pulled at points by buggies. At 1.30 p..m. on Sunday the party left on their return, and passing through Frase-rtown, they arrived at Te Keing'i, where the * night was spent with friends. A start for Gisborno was made at an early hour yesterday morning, and it was expected that the party would arrive about 3 p.m., but owing to the water circulation in one ear and the steering geir in the other going wrong, they were delayed, and did not arrive until G n.m.

The trip was a very enjoyable one. each one of tho party enjoying himself to the full. The trip 'was Yard oil the ears; but tho members of the party were determined to make the journey, and went through many tilings which might have dmu oil others.

The whole of the party were linum indebted to Mr. Skeats, agent for the Darraeq automobiles, who came through from Wairoa with them, a .id willingly rendered invaluable assistance in the matter of fixing up st; ldry mishaps to the machines. Ur. Shouts drove through on the ear which won the -reliability trial between Melbourne and Sydney. The car lias travelled in its time over. 25,000 miles.
