WELLINGTON, Jan. 27,

An inquest was held to-day on the body of Thomas Hall, who was killed at- Mahanga Bay yesterday during explosion and demolition practice by the Engineer Volunteers. The evidence showed that the men were being instructed by Captain Symon, oi the Permanent Forces, in “hasty demolition,” tlie object of lie particular explosion, which had the fatal result, being to demonstrate tlie destruction of a railway, a piece of railway iron being Mown up with guncotton. "While the fuse was burning Captain Symon told the men to stand back, but tlie deceased was not in sight, being about four chains away. Medical evidence showed that a portion, of iron had entered deceased’s brain, causing almost instant death. A verdict was returned of death by accident and misadventure, but the jury was of opinion that sufficient precautions had not been taken to prevent an accident.
