MISERABLE THIEVES.
STEAL CASTAWAYS' FOOD SUPPLY.
(Special to Times.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 27 ;
The meanness of some people passes all comprehension. After the wreck of the Elingamite. the Marine Department established a loot! depot at the Three Kings, and when the Hinemoa visited the place recently it was found that the depot hid been broken into by some miserable creatures. A wooden box containing a gun and ammunition, which had been placed there so that shipwrecked people might be able to shoot tlio goats on the land, had also been forced open. The gun, however, was originally placed in a tin case inside •tlie wooden box, in order that it might not be rendered useless bv the effects of the weather, and this the miscreants left untouched. It is a great pity (says the Post) that people who commit such wanton acts coukl not be adequately punished. This is not the only case of the kind, as it lias been found that oil has been stolen from the reserve store for the light at Jackson’s Head on more than one occasion.
