A serious explosion occurred at J. (J. Ewington’s moulding shop. William Darvill, nephew of the proprietor, being severlv injured. Operations had just been finished, and Darvill was running olf the remainiiig.molteii metal in the furnace. By some means water found its way into the concrete department beneath the lurmice, into which the suporflous metal ran. As soon as the Hu id metal was turned on ail explosion followed, wrecking the blast furnace. l)arvill had a miraculous escape lrom death. None of the others were injured. Darvill, who is a representative footballer, had a leg broken during a game last season. PAIiIATUA.
Ln a case in which a claimant sued to recover the amount of a dividend on a certain vaeo at Ashhurst, the Stipendiary Magistrate, Air. James, nonsuited plaintiff, .remarking that notwithstanding the totalisator was a legalised form of gambling, no money staked or lost could be recovered in a court of law. WELT.I NOTON.
John C'uadley, unmarried, aged 38 years, arrested yesterday afternoon, •>ii a cliargo of having no lawful means of support, was found dead in the police cell of tlio central station at 11.30 last night. He was in a low condition when arrested. An inquest will bo held this afternoon. BLENHEIM

The Salvation Arnry authorities have decided to convert the Arthurlio property at Middlemarcli into a home for orphan and stray girls. The property was acquired with the view of being utilised for orphan boys.
At the Police. Court this morning, All Hung, charged with having, in his possession opium suitable for smoking, was fined five pounds and costs. Accused was fined in October last for a similar oflence.
GORE. James Holms, of Waimatana, a wellknown settler, and breeder of Hereford cattle and Romney sheep, died this morning.
