As compared with hist sales’ closing rates prices are higher about par to 5 per cent, ioi greasy merino super, greasy merino medium, lower about five per cent, toi lambs, fine crossbred, scoured merino. lower about 10 per cent to 15 per cent for coarse crossbred, medium crossbred, crossbred slipe medium and coarse. Sales ex Tonga riro commenced at 120 s to 1225, but rapidly rose to 128 s to 130 s, at which it was cleared; secondaries making practically the same price as the choicest. Holders arc asking 138 sto 140 s for Australian butter ox Onirali, with no prospect ol any reduction. Tlio rise is chiefly due to the groat shortage, but- many consider the Butter Act- is also responsible by checking the sale of mixtures. Retailers an- new charging ltd to lOd. Department of Industries and Commerce has received the- following from the High Commissioner, dated London, February Bth : —-“The mutton market is weak; there is no change in price*. Thu lamb market is quiet. Canterbury brands being quoted at Gel per lb. The beef market is steady; hindquarters are quoted at 2/1 per lb. The butter market is very firm and excited. There is a strong demand at lull prices, and suppliers do not meet requirements. The market is active for future delivery. and there is little chance of any advance. The following arc current quotations:—Now Zealand butter 1365, Danish 138 s, Australian 1325, Argentine 1.32 s per cwt. The cheese market, is firmer, but the prospects uncertain. White makes are quoted at 61s. colored 625. The hern- market is steady, and there is a better demand. Reports from Manilla indicate steady shipments for some time. Current quotations are: Good fair grade, on .''pot. £2/ 10s; fair current Manila, on spot, £2B 10s; for March shipments good fair grade, £2B, fair grade £27 os, fair current Manila, £2B 10s.’ The cocksfoot seed market is a shade weaker. Bright dressed seed. 171 b per pusliol, is quoted at 755. The wool -sales have dosed, superior and medium merino being iu active demand at lull prices, but- inferior grades not being in demand. The market-was firm loi line crossbreds, all grades, but toi medium and coarse crossbreds, all grades, the market was tlull. The following aic estimated via lues: Superior merino Is to Is 3d, medium merino, lUu to Is, inferior merino 6/1 to 9d, fine crossbreds (all grades) Is to Is 2d, li’d, coarse crossbreds (all grades) medium crossbreds (all grades) 91 to 6/1 to 9d.
