A REQUEST FOR GRAVEL

Air. I. S. Simson waited on the Borough Council last evening with a complaint as to the state of Salisbury Street, in the Victoria There were, he said, 20 houses in 15 chains, worth £IO,OOO, and paying about £IOO annually in rates, and only £2O or £3O had been expended on the street, which was in a disgraceful state, and something should be done. Carts used the footpath, and this was dangerous to ladies, who were liable to get broken legs; His Worship. the Mayor expressed bis sincere sympathy in the matter. There were other streets in the same position, and ono would think that this was the only place. Air. Simson: It’s the only place that is a disgrace to civilisation. The Mayor stated that- the Engineer was instructed to do tho work, and there must have been some circumstances why he did not do anything ; he had a free hand in tho matter. In leaving, Air. Simson thanked the Council, and remarked that if tbev did not- get it, they would go tlio" right way about- getting it. Cr. Sawyer moved that- the footpath be gravelled.—The opinion . was expressed that this would be useless in this weather.—lt was.decided to do the work when the Overseer thought- prudent.
