There was a gathering of over 4000 people at tho Helvetia ostrich farm on Saturday! oii~tlib occasion of a garden party tendered to Air. F. AA 7 . Alassey, AI.P., the Leader of the Opposition. A presentation was made bv his constituents of a silver salver, a rose bowl, and a tea and coffee service. Air. Alassey is taking the opportunity later of replying to Sir Joseph AA’ard, so lie confined his address to what lie called the very real danger beforo tile country, in the struggle between Socialists and Anti-Social-ists. Air. Lang, AI.P., said that the Government policy was one of compromise,, and ho referred to tho land legislation and tlie Gaming Bill. Air. Aiander, AI.P., and Air. Bollarjj M.P., spo'ko mainly regarding socialism, and Air. Alonlc, ex-member for AA’aitomata, dwelt- at length on freehold versus leasehold. Other speakers were Air. A. E. Harding, who is to be tlie Opposition candidate for Ivaipara, and Captain Bell, Opposition candidato for AVaikato.
