A DISMAL PROCESSION. ON certain ’ occasions in this country there have been witnessed pageants of the most imposing character. Under overhanging arches and waving Hags, and amidst the eager faces and loud hurrahs of countless thousands, there have marched gorgeous processions with measured tread to inspiring music. But wo wish to refer to another pioccssion, composed of those who, IN NEW ZEALAND ALONE, are the victims of the blighting, death-producing, and soul-destroying influences of the Li<|itor Traffic. Here they are—with no bands of inspiring music to set their march, no decorations to attract their attention, and no ringing clieers to greet them from admiring crowds. A.s the vanguard of this procession, there are 20,000 drunkards, six in a row, two yards apart, and extending nearly four miles in length. Lolc at them-—four miles of maudlin and broken-down humanity; some realising their sad position, and others hardened by liabit and association, many of whom rend with their oaths the air which the feathered songsters sek to purify with their vocal praise. As these pass from our view there follows a huge contingent of sorrowful specimens of humanity, out of which per faces gaunt and sad, nature’s written biographies of the crushed spirits and liope-ahandoned hearts of tho POOR WOMEN whom at the manager altar their husbands promised to love and vowed to protect. In their rear is the tramp, tramp of ■i great host of CHILDREN of various ages, appealing to us with all the pathos of helplessness! as they look into our faces, the innocent victims of cold neglect and heartless cruelty. Behind this regiment of broken-down childhood there comes, with slow and measured tread.' a large contingent of PAUPERS, for which the Liquor Traffic is responsible. Look at them —3000; six in a row, three feet apart, and covering a distance of over a quarter of a mile. Each of tho number is an illustration of individual degradat ion, and tlio whole is a mass of human waste and national encumbrance. Following them, a long lino of faces meets us, some stamped with imbecile vacancy, and others with demoniacal madness, tho mental wreckage stranded upon the reef of the Liquor Traffic. Look at them—if you can bear the sight—93o LUNATICS, four in a row, six feet apart, and extending over a quarter of a mile in length. Now appears in sight a vast concourse of CRIMINALS of every grade, a burden to themselves, a menace to society, a trouble to their friends, and a drain upon tho nation. Here they come, 9000 of them, six in a row, three feet apart, and covering a distance of nearly a mile. And now, in tho rear, there falls upon our ears tho rumbling of a long line of HEARSES, extending to the great distance of over three miles, bearing all that Is left, of the 1000 poor victims who have gone down into a premature grave, tho finished product of tho Liquor Traffic for ONE YEAR ONLY. In tho foregoing calculations wc have giv en only the proportions (extremely moderate) for which the Drink business is responsible. It is only imagination that can review in so brief a time a procession of this sort, and yet, even imagination is powroless to picture the results of this unspeakably vile traffic, much less to exaggerate them.
