BELGIAN COOK RUNS AMOK. CAPTAIN AND MATE COMPELLED TO JUMP OVERBOARD. WRECK OF THE SEIZED VESSEL United Press Association —Copyright (Received Much 10, i.l. a.m.) SYDNEY, Miircn 9. A sensational sequel to the recently reported mystery of the wreck ol a schooner with a man and a cabin ho> aboard, at Ananiamu Lagoon, in the Gilbert Group, is to hand bv the island steamer Germania. Mr. Haves, an employee of Burns, Pbiip, anti Co., visited the wrecked schooner, and obtained the following statement from the cabin boy, who is named Jackson. The schooner, named Neuvro 1 igre, sailed under the Italian Hag, being owned by the master and the mate, ontl loft* Callao early in November. The cargo ayas 50 tons of coke. 'The crew consisted of the captain, the mate, the cook (who was a Bellgian named Mortimer), and Jackson. On the first day out the cook attacked tho mate with a tomahawk anil wounded him in tho head, but lie escaped in the rigging. Tho captain, hearing a scuffle, came out of liis cabin, but tho cook felled him avith a tomahawk, and then securing .a gun compelled tho captain and mate, under threats of shooting, to jump overboard. Tho cook scared Jackson into assisting him to jettison tlio cargo and do other work.. Tho cook told Jackson that lie intended to call at Tahiti, and then go to Australia, whoro lie hoped to sell tho schooner, the namo of which ho took the precaution to paint out. Plenty of provisions wore aboard, and after they had drifted about for weeks they finally drove ashore at Apamamn. This statement is similar to tho confession which Jackson made to ■the island authorities at the time of liis arrest.
