TE ORANGA SCANDAL.
“CORPORAL PUNISHMENT BARBAROUS.”
Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, March 19. The To Oranga enquiry was continued to-day, when the matron of the Auckland Industrial School, stated that the incorrigible girls in that institution were sent to Te Oranga. Sho gave instances of a change in a number of girls she was acquainted with who had been inmates of the Home. She said that corrective discipline was necessary, but she personally disliked inflicting corporal punishment. She would like to see the classification system adopted. The matron of the Industrial School stated that she would only adopt corporal punishment as a last resource.
The Rev. Mr. Feudal], who wrote a letter regarding Te Oranga to a local paper, was examined at length, and adhered to his charge that punishing girls of 19 and 20 with a strap on practically a bare back was barbarous.
