WELLINGTON.
(Special to Times!. 1 WELLINGTON, March 19. ’ The Government research scholar-, ships aro to be available immediately. There aro to bo four of them, one for each university college in the Dominion. The four students selected will, under these scholarships, bo able to eontinuo research work for two or three years in some particular- branch of science. The Levin peoplo are vory sore cause tho Government has not decided to establish tho dairy school there, and a meeting of residents is to bo hold for the puriio.se of telling the Government what they think about it. Local residents are inclined now to decry tho State farm there, and ask what use it can be put to. Mr. McNab, however, rather neatly countered tho thrust of the Levin rapier. “As a matter of fact,” ho said, “the Department contemplated tho erection of expensive buildings t which would bring the farm quite up to date, but as he judged from what had been published, that the settlers had an idea that tho land should bo put to some other use, ho had directed tho officers of the Department to stay proceedings hi connection with the new buildings, lest there might be a desire locally that the property should bo cut and sold. In that case tho Department would he able to accept Mr. Buchanan’s offer of £6OO to establish an experimental farm in . tho Wairarapa,” The vital statistics for 1907 give the proportion of deaths per thousand in tho four cities as follows:—Auckland, 13.38; Wellington, 11.45; Christchurch, 14.72; Dunedin, 12.98., Including the suburbs, the figures are as follows:—Auckland, 11.43; Wellington, 11.28; Christchurch, 14.37; Dun-, edin, 12.02. The birth rates for three of the central boroughs last year, showed a fall when compared with 1906. In Auckland the rate fell from 29.96 to 29.63; in Wellington from 27.85 to 27.53; in Dunedin from 28.96 to 25.69; but it rose in Christchurch from 28.19 to 30.47. Yesterday a high wind with warm, north-westerly rain prevailed, and to-, day we have a liigh cold wind with a a good deal of rain from the south. Business on ’change is dull. Wellington Meat Export shares sold at £3 ss. There were no other sales, and the real estate market is also dull.
