TRAMS FOR GISBORNE.
Mil. I-AIM. HANSEN TO EEl’OllT.
During his stay in Gisborne for tho past few days, Mr. Paul Hansen, managing director ol tho Auckland Tramways Company, had several interviews with leading citizens in regard to a proposal to lay down trains so as to connect the town with somo of the more thickly populated suburbs, the result being that Mr. Hansen lias decided to prepare a report oil two or three different schemes, which lie will personally -lav before tho gentlemen interested about October or November next. Tho proposed routes, method of traction, or gaugo of the rails has not yet been decided upon, but when the schemes aro submitted it will be for those interested to say if, and to what extent, tho proposals aro adopted. If tho formation of a company is undertaken, the proposals will need to bo laid before the Gisborne Borough Council and tho Cook County Council with a view to obtaining consent to apply for an Order-in-Council to proceed with tlio work of construction. The company, if formed, will lie an entirely local one, and tlio whole of the capital will bo raised in tlio district. Air. Paul Hansen will agreo to act, if necessary, as consulting manager to tlio company until tlio scheme is complete.
Air. Hansen states that in almost any other country but New Zealand, excepting perhaps the United States, a tramway scheme for a town tho size of Gisborne would he looked upon as premature, if not as ridiculous, but when it was considered that different conditions prevail -in New Zealand, the oarning power of tho people being so much greater, and general prosperity -so assured, lie had little doubt that a moderate tramway tV-lieme for Gisborne would be profitable from its inception. Mr. Hansen left by tlio AVaikaro yesterday for Napier, and states t-liat his stay hero has been extremly. pleasant.
