THE COMPANY’S OFFER. ASSISTANCE FOR THE MINERS. Press Association. GREYMOUTH, March 20. In reference to the statement by the Argus, Mr. Leitch emphatically denies that the company offered to donate the amount of the fine. The Grey Star says: “The manager, when interviewed on the question last night, said he knew nothing of the matter, but had heard the union had been informed by Mr. J. A. McCullough. that this would he done. He presumed that the decision was communicated by the directors in Christchurch to Mr. McCullough. The miners qye very emphatic in asserting that such an offer was made, and desired it to be made public. The Star gives an emphatic denial to the statement that the company had not offered to pay half the fine. It states that the information to the union was contained in the following telegram: “The chairman of directors is willing to contribute half the amount of the fine providing the matter is settled forthwith.” Mr. J. A. McCullough states that the Miners’ Union has voted £SO and £2O weekly to assist the miners.
