RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIPS.

OUTSIDE SUGGESTIONS INVITED., Press Association. AVELLINGTON, March 25. Circulars have been sent by the Education Department to the various University Colleges, notifying them of the terms of tlie now research scholarships, and suggesting that arrangements be made at once to invite applications. The circular adds: “Any advice your Council- may find itself in a position to give for the initiation and effective carrying out of the scheme, and any suggestions which can add in any respect to the suitable subjects in which 'research appears to give promise of proving of economic value to the community, will be gladly received. Almost before tlie scheme had been launched suggestions had been brought forward by which it can be made a direct benefit to the industry of the Dominion. Mr. J. A. Gilruth, Chief Government Veterinarian and Pathologist, expressed a willingness to take one scholarship student. This would provide an opportunity for the investigation of the bacteriological character of various diseases peculiar to stock. It lias been stated that a good field for research is open in connection with flax, for there is an acid in the fibre which eventually weakens it. If this could be neutralised tlie New Zealand product would become a more formidable competitor of that of Manila. Some years ago Professor Easterfield devoted attention to an analysis of tutu, a poisonous property tliat was of vital importance to stockowners. Only the fringe of the subject had been touched, and there is a good deal yet- to be learned of tlie medicinal aiid other properties, good .and bad, of New Zealand plants. Suggestions are being obtained from the Ain-icultnral Denartment which no doubt- will be aide to state- numerous problems which, if solved, would mean a Dig monetary .gain to New Zealand farmers and orcliardists.
