FIREMEN ON STRIKE.
SHIPPING TROUBLE AT PORT CHALMERS. MEN RETURN AGAIN TO WORK. Press Association. DUNEDIN, March 26. Something in tho naturo of a striko occurred at Port Chalmers last evening. Just as the Ulimaroa was about to leave for Sydney a disturbance arose among tho firomcn, owing, it is said, to tlireo of them having been paid off and to tho refusal to pay off a few others. It appears tho steamer had throo firemen in excess of tho required number. On their arrival, about a quarter of an hour beforo tho time of departure, tho firemen, numbering 20, informed tho captain that tho work was too hard, and after somo conversation tho whole number wont ashore. Throe men wore then secured to fill tho places of tlioso paid off, and after somo persuasion tho others returned on board. Just as the vessel was leaving two of them jumped off again. It iis understood that somo of tho steorago passengers were prepared to assist tho firemen in their work, if necessary. Tho vessel was delayed 40 minutes.
