TE ARAI BALLOT.
Thero was an animated scene in the vicinity of the Drillshed yesterday morning, on the occasion of tho ballot for tlio To Arid sections. Long before the timo appointed for tho ballot to commence, -a- crowd of landhungry applicants gathered, and they wero reinforced by tlio usual crowd of onlookers. Precisely at 10 a.m. balloting operations were commenced under tlio direction of the Commissioner, Mr. Trent, assisted by the members of -the H.B. Land Board. Messrs A. F. Kennedy and J. AV. Bright wero appointed scrutineers. Tho first block to bo dealt with was the Ruiialfimaia section, No. 7, containing 655 acres, and Mr. J. C. Wilson, of Mangatoctoc, was tho successful applicant. Mr. J. W. Bright, on behalf of the applicant, asked the Commissioner if the 10 por cent robato on rent would bo granted in future, and Mr. Trent replied in tho affirmative. . In reply to a further question by Mr. Bright, as to whether, in view of tho delay before tho sections could bo utilised, any rebate would bo
granted in tlio first nine months, was answered in tho negative by the Commission cr, who said, however, that the matter could bo referred to the Minister for Lands. A meeting of the Land Board was afterwards held to confirm the results of tlie ballot, and to hear any protests. Miss J. Livingstone, who was successful at the ballot in respect of section SA. Block XII. was objected against on the ground that she was not an unsuccessful applicant at a former Utillot. The Board is making enquiries into the matter. Mr. W. D. Lvsnar waited on the Board with regard to an application for timber leases, but consideration of the matter was held over until next meeting. Mr. Lane tabled several notices of motion for consideration at next meeting.
