MAYORAL ELECTION. TO THE BURGESSES OF THE BOROUGH OF GISBORNE. AMES AND GENTLEMEN,— In response to the request of a large number of ratepayers, I beg to offer you my services as Mayor during the coming year. My views generally on Municipal matters are strongly progressive. The most important question at present before the Council is that of sanitation, in which I take a very keen interest. I am earnestly desirous of initiating a Drainage System in the more congested parts of the Borough, which may be extended to embrace other portions as necessity arises. The Water Supply must be pushed to a successful completion, and those streets not already reticulated must bo provided for as speedily as possible. There is no doubt that our Streets and Roads generally are in a deplorable condition. Many are without metal at all, and in many moro the metal, is worn out. The whole question resolves itself into that of obtaining a cheaper and more regular supply of metal. I shall endeavor to develop the sources of metal wo already possess, and also to procure additional supplies. The number of Street Lamps should ho considerably augmented. I am in favor of the Municipal control of the Gas Works, and of bringing tho Eiro Boards Act into operation. I consider that the time lias arrived ivliou Gisborne should have a continuous Telephone Service, in order to bring it into line with centres of equal importance. I am strongly of the opinion that provision requires to be made for cases of Chronic Disease such as cannot be dealt with in our present Hospital, and also that tho present accommodation at tho Old Men’s Home should bo extended so as to include both sexes. If you elect me I shall have a seat on tiio Harbour Board. I am in favor of the construction of an efficient Outer Harbor, believing that better shipping facilities would materially advance tho welfare of the town 'and district. I endorse the action of the Board in procuring the advice of eminent engineers, and in referring tho plans to the marine su2)erintendents of the companies trading to tho port. I shall use every endeavour to have the matter placed fairly and squarely before the ratepayers as early as possible. I am anxious that futher Reserves should he secured for the people, and especially.;desire to obtain a Public Reserve up the Waimata River for the use of boating parties. I hear'i'y advocate that our Railway slnnd i be pushed on without further del ".-. When the forests are tapped an oemt timber trado will bo developed, wii.ch will result in materially reducing freights on coal and other imports, thus reducing the cost of living in Gisborne. I have the utmost faith in the future development, of Gisborne, and should you honor me by election it will be my constant endeavor to promote and advance its interests by every means in my power. My watchword will over bo “Progress.” Yours faithfully, J. W. WILLIAMS.
