THE RAILWAY SMASH.
MISTAKE IN THE SIGNAL. INJURED RECOVERING WELL; United Press Association —Copyright. SYDNEY, April 18. The engines were badly smashed. Two carriages of each train were demolished. It is believed tlie accident was caused through a mistake in the signal. Where the blunder actually occurred is unknown. The Glen limes train was running late owing to the heavy holiday traffic. It was in the act of pulling on. ;o the loop line to allow the Brisbane rain to pass. When they saw that a collision was imminent, both drivers applied tli9 brakes, but too late to ivert the impact, which was heard a mile away. The debris was hurled for a long listanco. A buffer was, found ten yards away. •
The soldiers used their -bayonets in freeing the injured caught amongst •Jic splintered timbers. That none .vere killed is attributed to the fact hat the soldiers and other passengers had mostly laid down, and were .leeping. Their recumbent bodies offered least resistance.
After the first shock of excitement, -.lie troops displayed fine discipline. The injured are doing well.
