MAYORAL ELECTION. TO THE BURGESSES OF THE BOROUGH OF GISBORNE. TOADIES AND GENTLEMEN,— In response to the request of a largo number of ratepayers, I bog to offer you my services as Mayor during the coming year. My vi.ows 'generally on Municipal, matters ifi-6”-strongly p'rogrossivo. Tbo most important question at present before tlio Council is that of sanitation, in which I talco a very keen interest. I am earnestly desirous of initiating a Drainage System in the more congested parts of the Borough, which may bo extondod to ombraco other portions as necessity’ arises. The Water Supply must bo pushed to a successful completion, and thoso streets not already roticulated must, be provided for as speedily as possiblo.; Thore is no doubt that our Streets and Roads generally are in a deplorable condition. Many are without; metal at all, and in many more the. metal is worn out. The whole ques-, tion resolves itself into that of ob-J taining a cheaper ami more regular supply of metal. I shall-.cndeavor to| develop the sources of metal wo al-j ready possess, and also to procure additional supplies. The number of Street Lamps should be considerably augmented. I am in favor of the Municipal control of the Gas Works, and of bring-, ing the Eire Boards Act into opera-, tion. I consider that the time has arrived when Gisborne should have.a coutinu-, ous Telephone Service, in order to' bring it into lino with centres of equal importance. I am strongly of the opinion that provision requires to be made for cases of Chronic Disease such as cannot be dealt with in our present Hospital, and also that the present ac-; commodation at the Old Men’s Home should be extended so as to include both' sexes. If you elect me I shall have a seat on the Harbour Board. I am in favor of the construction of an efficient Outer Harbor, believing that better shipping facilities would materially advance the welfare of the town and district. I. endorse the action of the Board in procuring the advico of eminent engineers, and in referring the plans to the marine superintendents of the companies trading to the port. I shall use every endeavour to have the matter -placed fairly and squarely before the rate-: payers as early as possible. I am anxious that futher Reserves should be secured for the people, and: especially desire to obtain a Public Reserve up the Waimata River for the use of boating parties. I heartily advocate that our Rail-j way should bo pushed on without further delay. When the forests are; tapped an export timber trade will be. developed, which will result in mate-" rially reducing freights on coal and other imports, thus reducing the cost of living in Gisborne. I have the utmost faith in the future development of Gisborne, and should you honor me by election it; will be my oonstant endeavor to promote and advance its interests by every means in my power. My watchword will ever bo “Pro-, gress.” | Yours faithfully, j J. W. WILLIAMS.
