MAYORAL ELECTION. TO THE BURGESSES OF THE BOROUGH OF GISBORNE. ADIES AND GENTLEMEN,— In response to the request of a largo number of ratepayers, I beg to offer you my services as Mayor during the coming year. My views generally on Municipal mattors aro strongly progressive. The most important question at present before tne Council is that of . sanitation, in', which I ntake-'a very .keen interest. I am earnestly desirous of initiating a Drainage System in the more congested parts of the Borough, which may bo extended to embrace other portions as necessity arises. The Water Supply must be pushed to a successful completion, and those streets not already reticulated mustbe provided for as speedily, as possible. There is no doubt that our Streots and lloads generally are in a deplorable condition. Many aro without metal at all, and in many more the metal is worn out. . The wkolo question resolves itself into that of obtabling a cheaper and more regular supply of metal. I shall endeavor to develop the sources of metal we already possess, and also to procure additional supplies. The number of Street Lamps should be considerably augmented. I am in favor of the Municipal control of the Gas Works, and of bringing the Fire Boards Act into operation. I consider that the time has arrived when Gisborne should have a continuous Telephone Service, in order to bring it .into line with centres of equal importance. ■ I am strongly, of the. opinion that provision requires to be. made for cases of Chronic Disease such as cannot be dealt with in our present Hospital, and also that the present accommodation at the Old Meu’s Home should be extended so as to include both sexes.
If you elect me I shall havo a seat on the Harbour Board. lam in favor of the construction of an efficient Outer Harbor, believing that better shipping facilities would materially advance the welfare of the town “and district. I endorse the action of the Board in procuring. the advice of eminent engineers, and in referring tho plans to the marine superintendents of the _ companies trading to the port. I shall use overy endeavour to have tho matter placed fairly and squarely before the ratepayers as early as possible. I am anxious that futher Reserves should be secured for the people, and especially desire to obtain a . Bubiic Reserve up the Waimata River tor the use of boating parties. I heartily advocate that our Railway should be pushed on without further delay. When the forests . are tapped an export timber trade will be developed, which will result m materially reducing freights on coal and other imports, thus reducing the cost of living in Gisborne. I have the utmost faith in the future development of Gisborne, and should you honor me by election 'it will be my constant endeavor to promote and advance its interests by every means in my power. My watchword will ever be “Progress.” Yours faithfully, J. W. WILLIAMS.
