DOMINION ADVERTISING.

ROTORUA AND OTHER SHOW PLACES.,

A PROPOSAL TO CATCH AMERICAN TOURISTS.

Press Association. AUCKLAND, April 20. The lion. Dr. Findlay, AttornoyGcnoral, expressed tho opinion to a “Herald” reporter that Rotorua, from whenco ho lias just come, ought to be made one of tho features in connection with the forthcoming visit of tho American fleet to Auckland. “Speaking selfishly,” the Minister remarked, “ono can scarcely conceive a butter advertising medium than to impress tho officers ami men ot the (tout with tho wonders.of our thermal regions. America is very much nearer than England, and the stream of visitors from tho United States should increase faster from tho latter if this country is properly advertised. Though we havo dono a good deal towards advertising tho Dominion, anyone visiting England can see how enormously more effectively advertised Canada is, not merely -by tho newspapers, but by direct advertisin'' in them and oil the railways. Probablv, too, the visit of tho officers of the fleet to Rotorua might bo mu do an occasion of inviting prominent Australians that would give further distinction to tho event.” Dr. Findlay said that no doubt his suggestion came partly within -tho functions of tho Auckland committee, but be would represent his views to the Cabinet. Ho added that as far as he could ascertain, nearly all tho Northern, members favored the proposal that both Houses of Parliament should adjourn in order to take part in the reception of tho fleet. On the other hand, several Southern members were opposed to tho idea. ‘ _ Ono result of the recent visit paid by the Hon. Dr. Findlay to Rotorua lias been to convince him that better co.nimunication with, at any rate, conic of our great thermal regions is required. To a “Herald” representative, the Minister said, “I think we must sooner or later provide means of reaching Wairalcei -and Taupo more easily and speedily than at present. .There seems no doubt but that the geyser valley at Wairakei contains a* filter concentration of thermal sights than any part of the whole island, yet only a certain number of tourists find their way there or to Taupo. When the main trunk line is completed there should he some easy communication made between the main lino and Tokaann, enabling southern visitors to come up via Taupo and Wairahci, on to Rotorua, and thence to Auckland, and enabling northern or Auckland visitors to proceed from Rotorua on to the main trunk via Tauxio, and either back to Auckland by tho main line or via tho Wanganui River. The expense of providing either a good road or a light railway’ between the main trunk andTohaami would not be very great, and as the traffic increases I have no doubt this proposal will impress itself on the Government.”
