(Special to “Times.”) AVELLINGTON, April. 29. NEWSPAPER LIBEL. This afternoon a writ was issued by Messrs. iSkerrctt 'and WyJio, on behalf of Mr. C. W. Earle, editor of tlio “Dominion,” claiming £5Ol damages for alleged libel, said to bo contuinod in tils issue of tho “New Zealand Times” of Saturday, tho 20th inst. Mr. Skerrett, K.C., with Mr. Myers, will act on behalf of the plaintiff. GOLD-PROSPECTING. Tho unusual sight of gold-prospec-tors’ pegs, with tho accompanying marks and documents, may bo seen nt the present time in the Manawatu gorge (reports tho “Foilding Star”). Two or three prospecting claims have been taken nip on each side of the river, and one party of prospectors lias reported most hopefully oil its chances of doing -well. The last vein discovered was calculated to set tho tiling going. Specimens tested had shown gold, silver, and copper in very payable quantities. The lead has boon traced from the Woodville fiats right across the ranges to the Palmerston side. It runs in a N.E. and S.W. direction. A DISTINGUISHED VISITOR.
Colonel Denney, of the famous ship-building firm, who is to arrive here to-morrow, will be entertained at a luncheon by the Australasian Institute of Marino Engineers. The Prime Minister has been asked to preside, and leading men in polities and business .will bo present. Colonel Denney is to be made a life honorary member of the Australasian Institute of Marine Engineers, and will be presented with the gold emblem of the institute. Sir Joseph Ward will make the presentation on .Friday morning. Colonel Denney and' Miss Denney are to be escorted by Mr. W. A. Kennedy on a fortnight’s tour of the North Island as the guest of the Union Company. Ho will probably return to Wellington, and leave for the Old Country, via Vancouver. THE OLYMPIC GAMES. Kerr, the championship walker, will leave in the Tongariro to attend the Olympic games. The public have subscribed £7O to defray his expenses, and mo difficulty is likely to ibe experienced in getting the additional amount required. MINING. On ’Change to-day the following sales were made : —Big (Rivers, which were accepted at yesterday’s figure, 19s Gd; Wailii Extended (3s 9i paid), at 3s 7id and 3s Bd, and Wailii Consols (4s lid paid), at Is Bd.
