DEATH OF PROMINENT SPORTSMAN.
Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH. April 29. Mr. Geo. G. Stead died shortly after 4 o’clock this afternoon. Mr. Read sustained a sudden seizure a ow days ago, from the effects of vhich he never recovered.
[The late Mr. G. G. Stead arrived li New Zealand in 1865, and in 1870 •ommenced business in Christchurch is a grain merchant. He con- . ested the Avon constituency in 890, but was defeated. He was argely interested in many Christchurch business concerns,among them icing the Press Company, Gas Comiany, Alliance Insurane.o Company, tow Zealand Shipping Company, Mann Strnthers Ltd., Mannings’ Brew■rv, and the New Theatre Royal, as veil as for many years being chairnan of the Canterbury Jockey Club. Is a sportsman Mr. Stead was pro,ably the best known in the Domiiion, and his colors have been seen m nearly every racecourse in New Zealand as well as in Australia,]
