The shooting season opened yesterday, and a -good -number of sportsmen made an early' onslaught on the ducks. A good bag was secured by Messrs. .J. (McKenzie, A. McKenzie, and (B. Newman, in the swamp on Air. J. McKenzie's property, -atPatutalii. Messrs. C. A. Fenwick and Phil -Sherfatt, shooting oil Repongaere, secured an excellent bag of 150 ducks. Air. Drummond, manager for Air. A)’. K. Chambers, also had a good bag.
The services at AYesley Church tomorrow will -be the beginning of a 10 days’ mission. Rev. A. B. Cha-ppell, ALA., of Wellington, will be the preacher. At the morning service there will be communion. A children’s service will he held at 3 o’clock, -and a special evangelistic service in the evening. Air. Chappell will also conduct a service every evening during the week, at 7.30. Those services are being looked forward to with great interest, and -a hearty invitation is given to all.
At a -function held on Thursday, writes our Wellington correspondent, Colonel Denney expressed regret at the absence of the Prime Minister, who has been confined to bis house for the -past few d-ays. Ho said lie had seen quite clearly -already that if Sir Joseph AYard did not take more caro of himself lie would certainly be laid up. Colonel Denny highly appreciated the kindness of Sir Joseph Ward and Iris colleagues, and especially as one of them had thought fit to preside a-t that gathering.
The monthly list of the newest works in'English a-nd American fiction has just been issued -by Mr. T. Adams, bookseller, Gladstoiie-road. Air. Adams has -also on hand a number of copies of the cheap edition of tho Baroness -Orczy’6 book, “The Scarlet Pimpernel,” 'which is shortly to be staged in Gisborne by Mr. J. C. Williamson’s Dramatic Company. Tho story is one full of film adventure and romauco of the time of tho -French revolution, -and' tlie book once opened is not laid -aside till the last chapter has been read.

An elderly man named Henry Duckett, who is evidently fond of the howl that both cheers and inebriates, was 'placed in the dock yesterday 'and charged with being drunk, it being his third offence within a week. In answer to the charge, the old fellow pleaded guilty, and admitted having been previously convicted. “For your own. sake i -will sentence you to 14 days’ imprisonment,” said' Air. Parton, “and will issue a 'prohibition order against you for 12 months, so you understand that you are not to take drink in that time.” The prisoner was then Jed .away to don a white suit and undertako Government employment.
