A LAND AGENT’S TRANSACTIONS.'. The Wellington correspondent to the “Nciw Zealand Herald,” writing under last Wednesday’s; date, says the interesting transactions of a gentleman, who is now “wanted,” but cannot ho found' in ’Wellington, ‘seem to-dcmolist, rato that -it is not only those young in the desire to make wealth who can. make mistakes, but also many who have the reputation of being shrewd, hardheaded business men. In at least one instance the victim has lost 'practically everything she possesses, in the world. This was a lady who had been keen in the Government service, and who, on leaving, received a iretiring allowance of £IOO. It is alleged that by sonio nutans alio got into touch with the gentleman who is wanted, and to save her the. trouble of drawing the money from the bank, he got an order from her, to do so. lit-is alleged that the money was drawn, that he kept out of the woman’s way until three o’clock, at which time the steamer in which she was going to England was going to sail, that ho then informed the woman that the bank had closed at three o’clock, and that it would be too .late for him to then obtain the money, but that he would do so' next day, and remit .it Home. Bankrupt is said to have handed a person a certain paper which' purported to be a registered transfer, yet there cannot possibly be a register transfer out 'of- the office of the . district .lands registrar. The document, is ds alleged, pur,portetL to .have the name of the district land registrar on it, and a substantial sum was paid oil the “documentary evidence.” The whole is Said; to be a fake, yet iio step was taken to have the matter probed to the .bottom.
