ACCUSED OF COERCION. INDIGNATION IN NATAL. United Press Association—Copyright (Received May 11, 9.54 p.m.) DURBAN, May 11. Vehement opposition- to unification as a form of closer union in South Africa has arisen in Natal, where the Pretoria. Conference is accused of shamelessly attempting to rush the question. The “Natal Mercury” declares that Natal is able to stand alone,- ami refuses to be coerced. A CONVENTION ARRANGED. NEAV CIVIL SERVICE LAAV. (Received May 12. 12.5 a.m.) PRETORIA, May 11. The Pretoria Conference has arranged for a National Convention to deal with the question of union. It consists of twelve delegates from Cape Colony, eight from the Transvaal, and five each from Natal and Orangia. LONDON, May 11. The “Times” Johannesburg correspondent says the conference desires to concentrate all its power on deciding .the course of events after the convention is in the Wands of the Governments, not Parliaments, to draft. . . t> A civil service law issued at J. retoria empowers the Government to request any official to qualify in Dutch or English within 12 months.
