AYAIPAOA V. WHATATUTU. ‘A match was played at Whatatutu. oil Saturday afternoon between teams representing Waipaou and Whatatutu and after a hard and exciting game ended in a win for tho latter by 3 points to mill, the winning try -being scored by Campbell after a combined forward rush. A majority of the players on both sides suffered from want of training, it being the first match of the season. Air. Ben Taylor made an efficient referee. The Waipaoa team was tendered a dinner in the evening by the winners, and everything passed off satisfactorily.

The following players have been chosen to represent ■ tho Gisborne Club in a practice game with tho Alhambra Club on Victoria Domain next Thursday, play commencing at 3 p.m. sharp : Full-back, Richard Campbell; three-quarters, J. Pollock, Wi Repa, G. McLachlau • five-eighths, Thompson (captain), Robt. Campbell; half, E. Whitfield; forwards, Seymour, A. Newton, Harrison, McConnell, Scott, J. Newton, Brown, and R. Morse (wing) ; emergencies—backs, Conroy, Pilcher, E. Austin; forwards, Ansell, J. Richards, G. Shellard. Any of the team unable to play are requested to notify the secretary, Mr. M. Ansell, as soon as possible. Players are also notified that the competitions will probably commence the following Thursday, and this will be the last chance for practice before the competition team is chosen. P.B. RUGBY UNION. The usual weekly meeting of the Poverty Bay Rugby Union was held last night in the Masonic Hotel. Present: Messrs H. E. Maude (chairman), G. K. Paslev, J. S. Wauchop, L. B. Sherriff, 11. Bright, D. E. Dustin, C. Morse, and E. L. Maude (hon. sec.). The secretaries of the newly-formed Gisborne, City, and Star Clubs wrote, enclosing affiliation fees and lists of officers and members. The clubs mentioned were admitted to the Thursday competition. A letter was also received from the Motu Club, asking for permission to plav Te Karaka at an early date, and also requesting the Union to appoint a delegate to represent them on the Union.—The requested permission was granted, and it was resolved that Air. W. Johnston be appointed delegate. Messrs Ryan Bros.j wrote regarding the allocation of the cup they had offered, and stating that as the Union would not allocate the cup fo the Thursday players as they suggested, the offer would be withdrawn.—Tlie secretary was instructed to reply accepting their decision on the matter. A report was received from Air. W. Hay,referee in last Saturday’s match', stating that he had occasion to order one of the players off tlie field for .unseemly language, and for disputing his decisions. —It was decided- to let tho matter remain over until next meeting, when Ali\ Hay and the player in question will be asked to attend. Air. Wauchop brought up the mater of tlie crowd encroaching on the far side of the ground, and also spoke of the behaviour of a section of the crowd in hooting the referee. He suggested the appointment of a strong ground committee to deal witli the matter.—After a general discussion, it was decided that all members of tho Union should take an .active part in keeping the ground clear, and also in reporting any person for unseemly conduct. It was further decided that tlie Sergeant of Police bo requested to have a constable on the ground to assist in keeping order. The question of conveniences was also mentioned, and the secretary stated that they would be erected before the end of tlie week. Air. D. Cowan was appointed a special delegate to represent the Union at the annual meeting of the N.Z. Rugby Union, to be held in Wellington on the 14th inst., and Alessrs Bright, Pasley, and H. E. Maude were appointed a committee to go through the annual report with a view to any recommendation from this district. ' , . On the motion of the chairman, it was decided to pad tlie goal-posts to a height of 6 feet to avoid any possible injury to players through collision. This concluded the general business, and the remainder of the evening was occupied in going through sunnlementary lists of players which had been received from the secretaries of the different teams.
