OPENING- OF AUCKLAND CLUB. mr McGowan eulogises clubs (Press Association.) AUCKLAND, May 12. At the opening of the new building of the Auckland Working Men s Club last evening, the Hon. Mr. McGowan said he considered such institutions were among the finest of social ms 1tutions one could possibly get. j did not 'know that he would not he in favor of doing away with the whde of the licensed houses in the Dominion if clubs were only established in their places. A man who entered a club liad to undergo the test of scrutiny, and had to be balloted for before he was elected, which meant that -he. had to undergo respectability.
