WESTPORT MURDER CASE.
THE DEFENCE PROCEEDING.
(Press Association.) WESTPORT, May 2S. At the hearing of tho charge of murder-against Olnf Halinnn and Andrew Anderson, to-day, Haakon Hnnkonsen, cook, who deserted from the Norwegian barque Tncorn, recently at Westport, stated he was with the accusod from 7.30 p.m. to a late hour visiting a fish shop, an hotel, and the theatre, and- being later witlr the two mon. During that- time Anderson did not leave him, and Halinon was only absent for a few minutes twice.
Robb, a sailor on the s.s. Canopus, said that he taw -accused- at the hotol about tho time the murder was •alleged to have taken place. He also saw him later at a row at a fish shop, and described tile fight in which lie stated Halinen took part with stewards off the s.-s. Taluno, finishing up with a further row on the wharf. Witness added that ho saw one of tho stewards next day with, lie believed, -a black eye. It 16 alleged by tho defence that the fight with the stewards was what accused described on the Saturday following Bourke’s death, and that his remarks were mistakably understood to refer to Bourke. The defence is still proceeding.
