ENTERTAINMENTS.

CHILDREN’S CARNIVAL.

His Majesty’s Theatre was crowded list evening when a Children’s Carnival arranged by Mrs T. H. ■ Woods was held in aid of Holy Trinity Sewing Guild. Among the audience was a large proportion of children -and these, as well as their grown-up friends, greatly enjoyed the entertainment provided. Judged from every point of view the performance was a distinct success. The children wore prettily costumed, the items well varied,'and the music carefully selected. The opening item was a novel form of “Mi’s Jarley’s waxworks” in which the children cleverly, and to some degree, patiently impersonated well-known characters’ in nursery rhymes and when “wound up” capers as-to cause the audience to roar with laughter. The Misses Poole, Davis, Ward, Fromm, Pearce and Hooper danced a skirt dance to the minuet music from tho “Gondoliers.” Tho movements of the girls were most graceful, and as various colored lights were thrown on d.uring the dance, the effect was enhanced. Miss Edna Hayes introduced some special dancing and was loudly applauded for her work. An old English Morris dance by twelve girls was also well received, the pretty costumes and stage setting being carefully studied,.. Master Rhinesmith played two violin soli, and was awarded encores. Six cadets sang “I want to be a Soldier,” Miss Elsie Nicolas “I’m always in the way” and “Fly away Birdie,” Miss Edna Hayes “My curly-headed babby,” Miss F. Nicholas “Please give me Heaven,” the Misses Pearce “Chin Chin Chinaman,” from “The Geisha,” and Master Maxwell Fry “Starlight.” The rest of tho programme was made up with marches, dances and choruses in which all of the performers acquitted themselves well. Airs Baty acted as a capable accompanist {■ A matinee performance specially j arranged for the convenience'of-noun- I try people will bo given this after- l. noon nt 3 o’clock when reduced prices 1 for admission will be charged. j
