FLEET WEEK.
COMPItEHENiSLVE SCHEME. Yesterday (says tho Now Zealand “Herald”, ‘of Saturday) nutters 'readied a definito stage regarding tllio arrangements for tilio reception of the American fleet, and the programme of festivities to bo carried out during tho time of the fleet's stay in Auckland. The nmjoii’ty of the looail bodies in and around Auckland have approved of the allocation of the efiin of JC2OSO, which is to ho subscribed by them. Tho Harbor JLloaird has agreed to donate the same sum as tho city,* oo that an amount of £3,000 in round figures will he spent by Auckland In biitcctaining the visitors, in addition to the- grtmt of £SOOO by the Government. . Yostordiy afternoon the General Reception Committee hehl an important imotiiig, at which tho programme', as so liar arranged, was snbmitt'.d, imd an executive appointed' to carry out,the details. It- is proivoscd' that the city shall' be decorated .and illuminated, and the leading 'business people are to ho adcX ed to assist tllio local committee to. carry out an harmonious .scheme Of decorations. ' Probably two arches will bo erected' in Queen-street— one, at tho entrance to tho city, land tho other at Wellcsley-street. The question of decorating tho principal public buildings will be considered by tho executive. The Government and local programme, so far agreed, upon, is as follows: August 9 (Sunday).—An-rival of the ! ’ fleet. August 10. —Morning; Landing and official reception. Afternoon: Grand review of Auckland troops. Evening': 'Official Government banquetin Drill Hall. August I.l.—Race meeting at Ellerslio. Reception by tllio Mayor of Auckland to visiting officers and representative persons. August 12 to August 14.—Visit of officers of fleet to Rotorua.August 14. —State hall at Government House. August 15. —Intel-provincial football match, Auckland v. Wellington. Departure of the fleet. The entertainments to bo given to the men Of the fleet are now in course of arrangement, and will be published as soon as they have been agreed upon. As previously stated, both Houses of Parliament will probably adjourn to enable members to takepart in the festivities, and prior to the adjournment Pairiliament will . pass an address of welcome.
