DEFEATS SOUTH CANTERBURY. (Press Association.) TIMARU, June 10. Tlio match Anglo-Welsh team v. South Canterbury was played on tho Caledonian Grounds this afternoon. Tlie weather was beautifully fine, and, the attendance was between BUCK) and 9000. The British team was captained by Harding, and South Canterbury by Roddick. ; Tlio teams took the field at 2,00 p.m., and had hardly settled down when Vassall was thrown on tho point of his right shoulder, and had to retire. On resuming, the looal forwards. headed by Roddick, broke away and entered the British twentyfive. A free' kick mulled by Carlton lot tho visitors- into tlie local twentyfive hut the lino was- soon cleared, and another determined forward rush forced Britain. On the drop-out, MeEvedy headed a strong rush, and from a scrum W. slorgan whipped the hall away to McEvcdy, wlio transferred to jackett-, who scored tho first try. No goal resulted. The Britishers made- a strong attack, hut when tilings looked most dangerous Williams mulled and South Canterburs' cleared'tlie line. Play then hovered about the centre, when Build, Roddick, and Hooper came through, and from a line-out - at the comer. Coles struggled across. Tho kick at goal failed, and tlio scores were equal. Play then became hard among the forwards, till Fitzgerald dribbled from the centre, and from a sermn near the- British posts Coles again whipped over. . Roddick failed with an easy kick. Chapman and Jackson, with beautiful line kicks, broke down tlio local defence, and Smith got away, but was brought down and had no one to tako his pass. Play returned to tho local twenty-five, when sVilliams, gathering up the ball from Roddick’s toes, passed to slcEvedy, who transferred to Williams, hut the latter, getting blocked, returned it, and AlcEvedy, being collai-ed, once more sent it along to AVilliams, who dashed over inside the comer flag., Jackson failed to increase tho score. On resuming, Bradley took play to Britain’s twen-ty-five, and from a scrum they got the ball, hut Carlton and Rodgers spoilt a rush by Alorgan, and, getting away, Britain had once more to force.. Jackett made a great line kick, and from a scrum Bradley kicked out. McEvedy got on to tho ball, ran clean through the South Canterbury backs to D. Scott, who grassed him, but too late, as the doctor had transferred it to Williams, who ran over at the corner. The kick at goal failed. The first spell ended: Britain'9, South Canterbury 6. The second spell was most determined. For tho greater part of it, tho ball was in Britain’s twenty-fivo, both Harding and Chapman getting rather severely hurt. The visitors' line was repeatedly saved by Jackett, who was well coffered, hut still got in liis great line-kicks. They wore of little use, however, as the local passing rushes .were smothering, and South Canterbury pressed them very hard. Great struggles on the line, however, at the corner gained little, though Britain had once to force, and s at another time to kick over tho dead-" ball line to ' save a score. At last the game opened a bit. ami from a scrum just oil the South Canterbury twenty-five lino Alorgan whipped the ball to Chapman, who swerved right through tho local backs and scored near the north-east corner.- The kick at goal failed, and the game ended with no further score. Britain 12, South Canterbury 6. As a match the first spell was a treat to witness, but the second spell was very poor owing to the numerous 6crums near the- line and the corners, and the many line-outs.

A schools representative match, South Canterbury v. North Otago, was played as a curtain-raiser to tlio British match, and resulted in a- win for South Canterbury by 48 points to nil.
