IMPORTED FROM ENGLAND
MR. DAVEY’S PROTEST. y X'*' • "" Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, June 12. (Mr. T. H. Davoy, M.P. for Obristcliuroh East, sent the following telegram to the Hon. W. Half-Jones, Minister for Railways, yesterday: “Visiting Addington workshops today I discovered that engine rods, axle bsxeu, and springs sufficient for eight ongines had just boon landed from England. For years repented Ministerial assurances havo boon given that wherever possible railway material should bo manufactured in our workshops, or, as an alternative, in New Zealand, this being strongly; emphasised by Sir Joseph Ward on Monday last. A satisfactory explanation may be forthcoming, but at present it appears that, despito in-, numerable promises to the contrary, material is being imported which could easily bo nuido by workers in tho Dominion.”
MR. H 1 ALL-JONES’ REPLY. June 12. The Minister of Railways has replied to Mr. T. M. Davoy’s telegram ro imported material for railway engines’ construction to-the effect that the parts imported were intended for one engine only, and were such as could not bo manufactured in tho Dominion.

Interviewed with reference to the statement made by Mr: Davoy regarding imported material for locomotives, Sir Joseph Ward said his colleague would attend to them. The policy of the Government was to obtain * all necessary material from manufacturers within the Dominion, but there were patent rights over which tho Government had no control.
