[Press Association.] WELLINGTON, June 17. At the Magistrate’s Court to-day Patrick Ryan was committed for trial on a charge of indecently assaulting a girl. A\in. Edward M-.ickio ■ wag committed for trial oil a charge of assaulting Samuel Julliffe, and robbing him of a gold watch valued at £SO. CHRISTCHURCH, June 17. At the Magistrate's -Court to-da.v. Matthew James Sahnn, licensee of the Bower Hotel, was fined £5 for selling liquor after hours. This afternoon it was reported that there was no change in the condition of Mr. J. -Gilroy, chief, engineer of the Kaituna,' who lost .both, legs through having been run over by some railway trucks -at Lyttelton oil Monday afternoon. At the meeting of tlio North Canterbury District Fanners’ Union Executive to-da v, a lottor was read from the Auckland Market Gardeners’ Association -asking tlio Union operate with the Association in making a protest against- the proposal ot the Government to employ .prison labor in market gardening,in competition with market gardeners now in business. The Executive was sympathetic to the extent that they considered that the market gardeners should not -be subjected to unfair competition ill .the open market, but-they were extremely unwilling, to interfere in the employment of prisoners in an occupation which .should be beneficial t.o them in many ways-. Tlio letter was form illy received, and no action was taken. NAPIER, June 17. At a sitting of the Conciliation Board to-day the evidence of lour workers who had been subpoenaed in tho engineers’ dispute was beard, and the Board adjourned till to-morrow. DUNEDIN, June 17. At a meeting of -the City Council to-night it was decided to reduce tlio price of gas from 5s lOd to 5? per 1000 ft, from next October. The local branch of the Civil Servico Association, at- -a meeting tonight, unanimously resolved to urge upon tho Public Service Classification Board tlie desirability of gazetting forthwith a -provincial classification of the public servants of the Dominion.
