CORRESPONDENCE.

[Correspondence on public matters is welcomed at all times, but it must be distinctly understood that this journal is in no way associated with the opinions of its correspondents.] ■ COUNTY LOANS. [To the Editor.] Sir, —Councillor W. D. Lysnar’s notice of motion to borrow £IOO,OOO for the purpose of constructing roads that w ill require no expenditure on maintenance for a period of time ooterminus with the repayment of the loan, which I suppose would be 32 years, comes up ’for discussion before Llie County Council to-morrow. To tlio Unthinking tlio scheme is plausible enough,, but those who have a knowledge of the cost of ro.id construction in ■ this district cannot but look .upon the proposal as absolutely visionary 'and impracticable. Without the interest and the sinking fund of the proposed loan can be saved out of the present cost of maintenance it would mean increasing the rate by a Jd in the £ on the capital value of the whole County, i This, I am 6ure, the ratepayers would resent. Even oil the fiats in the Whataupoko riding to make permanent roads it woiild cost pretty well £3,000 a- mile. There being about 20 miles of road in that riding it would Use up £60,000 of the proposed £IOO,OOO leaving a. balance of £40,000 for the rest of the County. Surely it would be hard to find any persons insane enough -to vote for such a. proposal. One hardly knows whether the benevolent Councillor is only perpetrating a joke as the share of the Whataupoko, Riding to be apportioned out of the loan is only £4OOO. The only way in which the roads about Gisborne and on the flats can be satisfactorily dealt with is by constructing without loss of time the little railway from Patutahi to Gisborne and 1 trust Councillor W. D. Lysnar instead of throwing obstacles in tlio way of this important undertaking will give his much valued assistance in pushing the work to a satisfactory conclusion.—l am, etc., “COUNTY RATEPAYER. ’ ’

THE ENGLISH FOOTBALL MATCH.

[To the Editor.]

Sir,- —It is certainly time something had been done in regard to tlie selection (proper) of the team to represent. iPoverty Ray in tlie 'forthcoming match. It is understood that the Rugby Union has appointed selectors, and they in turn have done tliqir duty (perhaps?) in trying to'forwaM the team and their preparation'. Ldt me here say that since the first 6elec\ tion of the team there lias been but' little interest taken in training by those selected. Also, now the time is drawing near, the selectors have further made preparations and a different- selection. The interest by tbe players seems to go further backward, and- tlie two past nights selected for the two picked teams to train only seven and five turned up respectr ively. This is surely a most unsportsmanlike way in which to satisfy the interest taken in fotball by tlie Gisborne public, and .unless something is' done for tlio next four practices it can: lie pretty well expected that the British-l’overty (Bay match will be only a farce.—l am, etc., j “INTERESTED.”
