COOK COUNTY COUNCIL. MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of tho Cook County Council was held yesterday. Present: Hon. Captain Tucker (chairman), Cm. AV. D. Lysnar, A. E. Matthews, H. White, T. Holden, W.-JD. S. MacDonald, AV. Shorratt, H. 'Poland, and E. Lysnar. C 01 II ((ESP ON 1) EX CE. Air j. P. Adams asked for a 'contribution of £5 towards gravelling the road leading past Mr. Seivwriglit’s property, AVhataupoko. Or. Matthews moved that £7 he granted, the amount to include the £5 already voted. 'The motion was carried. The Town Clerk of Gisborne wrote stating that the Council had agreed to pay the royalty on stono from Pa- V tutam and expressed tho hope that the tramway scheino would he pushed on with all possible speed .-gnlteceived. J ; . Mr John Grifl'en asked that ho bo granted better facilities for quarrying stone at Patutahi or relieved of his contract. It was decided that the applicant must adhere to his contract. Tho Patutahi Itoad Board asked the Council hivo the pound at Matawhoro repaired. The Clerk reported that he had. arranged for the pound to he repaired so as.,to he,fit for use until the lease expired in October next. . Cr. Jn reply to a complaint by the Council regarding delay in transhipping material for a bridge from Auckland, Air J. A\'. J. Preston, Branch Alainger for the Union Steam Ship Company, wrote stating that the consignment was transhipped as speedily as possible and landed in a regular and proper manner and the Company could not entertain any. claim for alleged shortage, as the full number of packages received by the Company had been correctly landed. The Commissioner of Crown Lands informed the Council that the AVaiiiirere quarry reserve was under the control of the Crown; hut permission to remove metal could he obtained on application.—Received. The iSecrct iry of the Rover tv Bay Rugby Unioit asked the Council to join with them in a reception to the British Football Team on July 4th. It was decided to join with the Union in the reception of the team. ■Air H. E. Burgess, on behalf of a number of settlers at Alatawai, inquired what sum was still to the credit of forming the AVaihuka road, and also stated that the Government would be asked to place a sum of money on the estimates for, this and other roads in the district. " ' The Clerk was instructed to' inform Alt- Burgess what amount was in hand to complete tho AVaihuka- road and to support tho request to the Government for a grant for road formation in the district. Cr. F. 'Lysnar : t These are the settlers who want to separate from us and ask us to battle for them. The Department-of Roads forwarded a copy of the “Gazette” notice declaring King and Queen streets and Oliver road, uAlotu Survey District, to be County roads. The Chief Engineer for ißoads, in reply to the Council’s letter, states that only £3IOO of the £10403 voted had been spent within the County, anti pointed out that the total sum voted was £12,813, and the amount authorised to he expended ivas £13,837 15s 9. Messrs Field and Straclian waited upon the Council and Mr Field said tlio metal in use now was too poor for the purpose and soon ground to dust. He thought the Council-might grant £2O to prospect in the district for .better metal. He was of opinion good metal could be got in the AVliakaroa creek. ■Or. W. D. Lysnar said lie knew there was very good metal in the Whakaroa. creek. Cr. Holden thought it would bo wise to do a little, prospecting for better- metal and moved tint £2O be granted -for that purpose. Tiie settlers would also look around to see if any better stone that at present in use could be found. Cr. Matthews seconded the motion. Cr. F. Lysnar: If £2O is not sufficient. allow the Engineer to prospect at his discretion. Mr Field asked if it was possible to get any nietalvfrom Te Karaka. The Engineer said it would be better to use river shingle, which could he got in the district. Cr. W. ,D. .Lysnar said the Borough was completing arrangements to get screened shingle from Te- Karaka at 2s 9d a yard and, as tlie Borough was willing to help the County, lie thought -arrangements could be made to allow the County to obtain a supply at that price. Cr. Holden’s motion was carried. ..Mr Field said that some time ago Lhe iCouncil placed a stock bridge in the district, which had now got into the river. A new bridge bad been erected at the same spot and lie asked tint permission lie given to the Board to sell or use the timber. Permission was granted. Mr AV. !)• Wilkinson applied for permission to lay a tram from Kakauroa into the Tahora district along a route already surveyed-, • and if his request was gr mted he would -be quite willing to allow settlors reasonable latitude in the use Of the tram. The Chairman said it was quite clear the Council could not grant licences to more than one'person and had already under consideration the ,gr inting of a licence to Mr AV. L. Bees with the understanding that he would he.able to come to some arrangement with the other annlicauts. He (the■ Chairman) had foreseen the difficulty and had consulted the County Solicitor on the question and was advised- that a clause should he inserted in the licence giving the Council power of revocition .in ease of a dispute between the parties. He thought the letter could he put asideuntil Mr Bees’ application was before the -Council again. Cr.. Lysnar suggested that Mr Wilkinson he communicated with so as to ascertain the position, and li’e matter he -fully discussed at the next meeting.
