Uegirding the visit ot the, American. fleet. it has been decided that at tljo entrance to tin? city tlic visitors will be mot with an elfocLivo arcli wliioli ia to 1)0 oroidcd across Queen street half-way between the lioad of tlio wharf and Customs hired. Tlio spin io Wilt, with a height of Wilt in llio flour, while from tlio street to tlio top of tlio decorations will bo oOFt. ‘The two Hanking towers ire 55ft in height, with flagstaff's above that’ana in. '.Vikail palms, ferns, and other hush greenery will bo used in tlio decorations, which are to be on a lavish scale, and a touch of bright color will bo lent by trophies and lligs. As the sailors approach the city they will pass under a huge “\\ r eleoine,” and when they return to their ships they will see. on the other side of the arch Dio wish “Kia Ora.” The night effect has been studied by a striking arrangement in electric light, which is being worked out by Mr .Alex. Wyljio, electrical engineer to the City Council. 'Che words are to be outlined in lights as well as sonic other portions of the structure, but the main feature will he two II ig«, tiie Union Jack and Old Olorv, done in colored lights. The idea is that the lights should be Hashing so the elfect will bo of Hags waving in (ho breeze; Some 1000 lights will be used in this arch, and another arch will stand at tlio entrance to the drill hall, where Iho civic banquet is to bo given. There oro three spans, the centre one having a width of 21ft. Tlio side spins are of Oft each; the main entrance will bo 18ft high and the others 15ft. The whole structure is to stand back loft from the street, much in the style of the proscenium at a theatre. Greenery will bo freely used in the decorations, and on each side of, the centre a roll there is to bo a bunch of flags in which those of tlio guests and their hosts will be entwined.
