tMATAWHERO STOCK SALES
There was a better feeling among buyers at the fortnightly stock sales bold at- iMatawhero yesterday, and prices showed an all-round improvement. Farmers bid freely for store wethers and owes in lamb, and quotations made a, considerable advance upon recent sales. “Tho chief cause of the improved demand for store stock,” said a farmer to a “Times” reporter, “is that grass is plentiful and, with tho warm days and mild weather, continues to be nourishing, so that very little turnip feeding is necessary. Upon Tho prices ruling at the last two moutlis’ sales it should pay handsomely To buy stock to hold for the spring.” SHEEP. In all about 8000 sheep wero penned, and nearly all sold; sellers experiencing a better market than for sonic months past, and buyers showing a. readiness to bid freely. There was a small yarding of fat sheep. Wethers brought from Ek 3d .to Wild, 93 freezers 11s, and 38 fat ewes 9s. Store wethers found ready buyers, and; sold from 11s to 13s 7d; the following being the principal pons: 61 well forward 2-tootlis from Midi ga-t-u 13s 7d, 201 well forward 13s Id, 106 in good condition- 12s 6d, 51 at 126, and 17'5 at 11s. Ewes were in demand at recent quotations, but as tho market was not over-stocked prices advanced slightly on recent rates. Tho following were the principal sales: 165 nearly fat, from AYaikoliu, 9s 6(1, 196 big-framed, well-condition-ed sheep from Mangatu 10s Gd, 289 at Bs, 62 2-tootlis in lamb 8s Id, 42 Well-fleeced 7s 6d, 38 in lamb -Is 9(1, 17 in poor condition 3s 3d, 24 in lamb (poor) 2s Cd. Hoggets :31 well-grown at 7s Gd, 202 at 9s 2d, 141 at 8s sd, 31 int Is lOd, were tho chief pens.
CATTLE. There Wiis a large yarding of cattle, about 600 head being offered. The fat stock was in excellent condition, and brought better prices. One Oeef steer at £7 10s, 7 steers tit £7, 1 young steer at £5 10s, 3 steers at £4 15s being tho principal sales. Tho store cattle also looked well, but did not advance in price. The chief lots cleared were: 8 young steers at £2 Is, 1 store cow at £2 17s Gd. 9 steers at £3. 20 at £3 17s Gd, 1 dairy cow at £3 10s, and 14 calves at 17s 6d, 6 calves at £l. HORSES.
