Tho question whether the existing method of illuminating lighthouses is, or is not, a rational one is being studied in Germany, and the advisability of :i change in the system has found many advocates. , The idea was conceived by a sea captain, who declares that a lighthouse would render far greater service if the rays of light were directed not towards the horizon, but towards the zenith, that is, not horizontally, but vertically, in an ascending column. There would be then no brilliant horizontal rays to blind the eyes of the navigator, blit only ian ever-ascending luminous column of light. It might be made to ascend to a very great height, and when -there were clouds in the sky the under surfaco of these would be lighted up and the illumination greatly magnified. The light, under these conditions, would bo visible from -a far greater distance than it is u.t present, the visibility being now curtailed by the rotundity of the earth-. The originator of the idea maintains that the illumination- from a lighthouse, the rays from which were projected vertically, would be visiblo from a distance of eighty nautical mites, and with a much- smaller consumption of combustibles. The lighthouses,he says, might easily be made distinguishable the one from the other by tho, present system of eclipses and occultatiou.
