THE NEW DRILLSHED.
SOAIE IMPORTANT PROPOSALS.
As the framework of the new Drillshed is becoming one of the conspicuous sights of the town, and its early completion can be looked forward to, local volunteer enthusiasts are bestirring themselves in regard to its utilisation. The first step to be taken is to devise ways and means to provide the additional sum of from £ISOO to £2OOO that is still required to pay for the building. In this connection an Executive Committee lias already been formed, consisting of Colonel Porter, Colonel Winter, Alajor AlcCredie, Captain Cowan. Surgeon-Captains Scott and Schumacher, Lieutenants Evans, Hamilton, Mitchell, and Coleman,, His Worsliip the Mayor, Messrs A. F. Kennedy and Redward, and the Chairmen of the Harbor Board and County Council. Tho three local bodies are also to be invited to each appoint another representative on the Executive. Early next month a public meeting is to be called, at which a general committee -is to be appointed. Lieutenants Hellier Evans and Hamilton have been appointed secretary anil assistant secretary respectively.' It is tlie intention of tlie promoters to endeavor to interest the public generally in every step they take in regard to the Drillslied, which they look upon as the oroperty, not merely of tlie volunteers, but of the community as a whole. It is contended that the Drillslied, as the headquarters of the local defence force, should lie heartily supported by the citizens of the town, and to this end their co-operation will bo invited at every, turn.
The new building is to be opened in October next by a military ball, to be fixed for . Show night-. Popular prices are to be arranged in order to fill the huge building, which it is said will accommodate 1500 people. In February an entertainment on a large scale is to be presented, and Professor Berzoni, who has a firstclass reputation for the arrangement of attractive displays is being communicated with at the present time in this connection.
