CHRISTCHURCH, July 10. In reply to a lietter from the Town Clerk to tho Department of Agriculture, Perth, re municipal markets, the Department has sent their regulations and ’ plans of the city markets.

Tho manager of the market states that the city markets were built some ten years ago, and although not quite up-to-date, have many good features for distribution. They are central to tho town, and havo a railway siding on one side and open on to the main street on the - other. The market handled the bulk of the wholesale meat supply for Perth; also fish, ami a large quantity of poultry. There were a few stalls for small dealers, but they were not a payable feature. A great deal of poultry and other products were sold through these markets, but tho principal business uas the wholesale distribution of meat, fish, poultry, fruit, etc., for which colt! storage accommodation was provided. Both tho city markets and the cold’ stores were under the direction of the Agricultural Department, add pay working expenses, with a fair margin for interest and depreciation, but ae a whole the .rents were not exhorbitant.

The Secretary of the Metropolitan Pish Market Board, Brisbane, wrote stating they did not handle fruit, but worked under the Metropolitan Market Act, 1905. So far the Act hud fully justified its existence, the fishermen as weEl as the public being benefited. Tho former find a market for ■a regular supply to,tho latter, and the public have a good supply of inspected and wholesome fish. The market had paid its way without assistance from the Government or local authorities in any way.
