A SINGULAR CASE.

A SHAM DETECTIVE. [Press Association.] DUNEDIN, July 12. A peculiar case was heard at the Police Court yesterday, when a young man named John Leslie Smith was charged with being deemed a rogue and a vagabond, in that lio did, on July 9, impose upon George Campbell, by false verbal representation, •nid obtain admission to His majesty's Theatre by falsely-stating that ho was a detective with a view to obtaiiurt benefit.

The police stated that the accused on Tuesday night told the doorkeeper at the theatre he was a detective; and secured free admission to the stalls, and' that when arrested he said he did it for a joke.

The case for the defence was that ail Tuesday accused paid' for admission, making no representation as to, being a detective, and on Thursday he paid in the ordinary course, - but came out at the interval, had a few drinks, and oil return told the doorkeeper he was a detective.

Evidence having been given as to accused’s good character, the oa6o was dismissed with a caution. , -
