At tho Democratic Convention Mr. Bryan in the first ballot received 89/ votes, Judge Gray 59, and Gove moi Johnston 46. Mr. Bryan’s nomination was then made unanimously. A MILITANT DEMOCRACY. NEW YORK, July 11. When his nominator described Bryan, as tho choice of the militant democracy, "tlio Convention clieered witfi the wildest enthusiasm. Innumerable flags waved, whilst a dove wat released from above the platform.' A great portrait of Bryan was lowered from the roof, and aroused fresh cheering as the banners of the different States were grouped-refund Bryan’s party. . . . . , The platform unanimously adopted includes a tariff plank, demanding immediate revision and reduction o) import duties and a gradual restoration of the tariff to a revenue basis. It declares that articles competing with trust-controlled products should forthwith be placed on the free list. Duties on- the necessaries of life should be materially reduced, especially those competing with American manufactured goods that are clieapei abroad than at home. Mr. Kern, an Indianapolis lawyer, was nominated by acclamation for the Vice-Presidency.
